Sebelius responds to president's 2011 HHS budget

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius has released a statement highlighting critical components of President Obama's 2011 HHS budget that will not only protect citizens from bioterrorism but also protect the health and safety of American citizens.
“Under this budget, we will provide the health and human services that Americans depend on more effectively, slashing waste and focusing programs on results," Sebelius said. "And we’ll make many of the necessary investments our country has been putting off for years, including investments in fighting health care fraud, strengthening our public health infrastructure, and getting serious about health and wellness. This budget is a big step toward a healthier, stronger America.”
Obama's HHS budget calls from $476 million for the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, an increase of $136 million. This new funding will be used to sustain the support of next generation countermeasure development in the high priority areas of anthrax and acute radiation syndrome.
The funding will also be used by the BioShield Special Reserve Fund to support procurement activities and advanced research and development.
The increased flexibility provided to BARDA by the funding will enable Project BioShield to target resources to the most promising countermeasure candidates no matter if it is through advanced development or acquisition.
